I was asked to design the identity, catalog and exhibit space for the Facies Lunae (Faces of the Moon) exhibit for the Museo de la Casa del Libro, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The museum archives gave me great visual material to work with, including a copy of the Frasconi Woodcuts Arabian Nights. The moons in each of the featured books were used throughout the catalog and exhibit hall. Space was transformed giving the context of standing on the Moon looking towards the Earth. Neil Armstrong’s bootprint was recreated and set on two tiles. Scout Books in Portland printed this beautiful catalog showcasing jewels from the collection in one-color versions. During the course of the exhibitions’ opening night, the catalog was dubbed “The Passport to the Moon” by visitors.
Illustrations were kept but edited to one color to be mindful of the budget while still being able to showcase the works of art.
The graphic wall used to design the flow of the exhibit space showcased a listing of pop culture representations of the moon in song, books, expressions and terms. Type was set in Brioche by Jessica Hische.
